This popular event is being held over spectacular private farm land starting in Waipara and travelling through the Weka Pass with unsurpassed vistas of the limestone country of North Canterbury. These tracks are only made available for this MTB event.

The 15km circuit commences from the Shellrock yards (accessed from Glenmark Drive, Waipara) and after an initial 1km warm up winds its way gently up to the Weka Pass skyline along a well formed gravel farm track and then across tussock grass land. This part of the track offers good views to the south before commencing a long traverse across the Shellrock escarpment above Frog Rock. This traverse offers a birds eye view of the Weka Pass and if you are really lucky you may even see the steam train far below! The track descends to Fiddlers before a short climb up to a drinks station situated on a saddle at the 10km mark. This stopping point offers a good vantage point to observe the route up Mt Donald being taken by the 30km riders! The track then climbs gradually to the highest point of the ride 460m on the crest of Shellrock before commencing an exciting 5 kilometre descent through tussock, forest and farmland to the finish line. Track conditions include gravel farm road, 4wd track and open tussock grassland. A great ride with terrific views in all directions and 520 metres of altitude over the ride.

The 26km circuit has it all, 1000m vertical over 4 ascents. Mountain biking at its best, steady grinds, one short steep climb, easy traverses across tussock grassland, long swooping descents through limestone outcrops, riding the rim of Mt Donald with the valley floor 900 feet below before descending to a narrow gorge filled with native vegetation. This ride has some terrific scenery (if you have time to appreciate it) and the same final 5km descent off the Shellrock escarpment through tussock, forest and farmland to the finish line. This is very rideable but a good standard of fitness is required. A unique opportunity to ride on four privately owned properties, Shellrock, Mt Donald, Pentland Downs and Carvossa. There is a drinks station at 10km and 22km. Track conditions include gravel farm track, 4wd track and open tussock grassland.

www.groundeffect.co.nz
Ground Effect was conceived in the early nineties – the precise moment somewhat lost in a fug of Guinness. Like many, we aspired to create a work environment that better matched our own values. Mountain biking and cycle touring had long been our collective passions, so of all the business ideas we brainstormed it was perhaps inevitable that cycling would prevail. We saw an opportunity to make cycling and cycle clothing less serious – more fun, like surfing with big baggy shorts ‘n’ all. Bicycles deliver so much good for society: as a recreation they get us outside and keep us fit; as transport they counter the trends of increased congestion and energy consumption. Our calling had called.
